For map sharpening in general, that's correct.
If coot is doing something different (aka sharpness with reference to a
model), then Paul's description would be authoritative :) .

Minor clarification - there are no original B-factors when dealing with
map sharpening. The sharpening/blurring B-factors are different (although
conceptually related) to the B-factors in an atomic model (PDB file).
