Thanks Alan. There is another bug on synchronization in the prefs implementation that I need to look into.

I will get rid of the extra brace, and push this then.

I looked at the changes and the approach looks good to me. Hopefully this is the end of the issues with the preferences API on Mac. The only thing that doesn't seem right to me is MacOSXPreferences.java L234 where it looks like an additional brace has sneaked in.
