More or less.  Cosign doesn't try to interfere with authorization or  
identity schemes, allowing you to use any of the many platform  
specific schemes which are readily available.  However, you haven't  
said much about what you're trying to do.  If all accounts are email  
based, are you thinking of using Friend?  If so, the ID is the email,  
so no directory lookup would be necessary.

There's a separate cosign friend package, which provides a lot of  
management functionality, including the ability for users to make  
their own accounts, existing users to invite new users, XML-RPC  
interfaces for application-level mass invitation.  Lots of stuff.
