Amen to all that, Boyd.

Faye Logue’s Strabane & West Ulster in the 1800s: History from the Broadsheets
– Selections from the Strabane Morning Post 1812-37 is essential reading for
Tyrone and Donegal genealogical researchers. Additionally, there are also
interesting reports of events in Cos. Londonderry and Fermanagh.

Whilst it may not be possible to locate your forebear, the reports of social
conditions and court records offer an insight into pre-Famine times and the
lives of our forebears. A superb read and an absolute bargain at $16.95 for an
Ebook. I humbly state this as the proof reader who is well-acquainted with the
content of this wonderful work. It is a labour of love. Many thanks Faye!

Subject: Re: [CoTyroneMailingList] Strabane & West Ulster In The 1800s;
Selections from The Strabane Morning Post

What's the question, Jim?

This is probably THE best book written about west Ulster in the 19th century.
Let me explain why.

1. It is made up almost entirely of articles from the Strabane Morning Post
so, no interpretation, all primary sources, yours to analyse and consider just
as people at the time had to consider them.

2. It covers the early 19th century, that period when we run out of records
and as such is extremely useful.

3. It is packed full of names and people of genealogical interest, including
long comprehensive lists of people who registered for the vote under the new
legislation of the late 1820s, with their addresses. Were your folks there?

4. No other book will give you such an informative and fascinating insight
into how people lived in the early 19th century. Read how people stoned the
boat carrying cholera victims down river from Castlefin to the Lifford
infirmary because they were so terrified of catching the disease. This was the
world of your ancestors and you can read about it for yourself rather than have
someone tell you their impressions of it.

5. It is edited by Faye Logue, one of west Ulster's foremost local and family
historians who has spent decades researching the area and contributing data
townland maps for the benefit of all of us.

6. It is well illustrated, comprehensively indexed and will be a book that you
will read all the way through as soon as you get it and then return to it over
and over again.

If you can locate a copy, buy it!! Otherwise check out any reference to it
which you can find online at CTI or anywhere else.

Hope this helps,

Boyd
