Thanks for your very kind comments, Valerie and am pleased to assist your
research. BTW, I have no connection to either Carnone church or Donaghmore
parish. And thanks for the information re. your forebears in Nebraska.
Carnone Presbyterian church was a Secession congregation and according to the
Ordnance Survey Memoirs (1836) drew its members from Donaghmore, Convoy,
Raphoe, Urney and Clonleigh parishes. Writing in The Laggan and Its
Presbyterianism – Lecky (Belfast,1905)
www.cotyroneireland.com/estore/index.php?maincat_id=6<http://www.cotyroneireland.com/estore/index.php?maincat_id=6>
Rev. Lecky recalls “Carnone is a much smaller congregation than it was at one
time, largely owing to the fact that in our fathers’ day Seceders thought
little of a long Sabbath day’s journey in order to attend the ministrations of
the Church of their affections, often passing the doors of one or more Synod of
Ulster [meeting] houses on their way. Until recent years several families
living in Raphoe and far beyond it, were members of Carnone. In the year 1840
there were 280 families connected with it.”
Presbyterians had been emigrating in large numbers to the American colonies
from this part of the north of Ireland since c1720 and it would be almost
certain there would have been family and neighbours already resident in the
U.S. (the land of milk and honey where opportunity abounded).
Continued success with your research,
Len Swindley

Hello Valerie - YES, all hail to the weavers, farmers, saddlers, stonecutters,
mothers, milkmaids and babies of Ireland - the ancestors. My late husband's
forebear ended up the richest man in a western Kentucky county - LOL

Hello Len Swindley!
You are quite amazing - doing all this work from Melbourne. I have seen your
transcriptions for months now, with the help of some other Genealogy folks here
in the States who led me to Cotyroneireleand.com.

Elywn has been most generous, providing additional information about the local
area also.

Thank you Len for your additional information.
I actually have a transcription of Henry Jrs' March 1840 baptism record which
lists it in Raphoe parish which might explain why it isn't with the other
children's records (I think William died as a child). I will look for the
Stevenson records, the ones that I had located didn't have a Barbara named at
all.

When my family and I visit in September, I will know far more about this group
of ancestors than most, except our grandparents. Although Henry Sr may have
been a labourer and his father Hugh a weaver, their son and grandson, created a
town in Nebraska (with their name) that has fostered a strong community since
1890.
In case you might be interested, I am attaching the 2 pages of the town
Centennial book that was the information I had to start with, sorry it's not a
better copy.

Many, Many thanks for all your assistance!
best regards,
Valerie

Hello Valerie and Elwyn,

As Elwyn has stated, it can be difficult locating the residences of weavers and
labourers; in most instances they resided in humble cottages erected on farms
where they were employed. You are most fortunate that the marriage announcement
from the Londonderry Sentinel has survived. (see attachment)

The following entries were extracted from the Carnone Church records:

Carnone Presbyterian Church, Donaghmore Parish, Register of Baptisms

Jan 8 1837: William son of Henry Allen & Barbara

Feb 14 1844: Susan dau of Henry Allen & Barbara

Sep 4 1846: Sarah dau of Henry Allen & Barbara

No record of a baptism of Henry James

You may have greater success in finding data on the Stevensons who were
numerous in Donaghmore parish and about Carnone. It is necessary to gather some
knowledge of townlands within Donaghmore – see
www.cotyroneireland.com/maps/donaghmore.html<http://www.cotyroneireland.com/maps/donaghmore.html>

You will note that it borders Raphoe parish where there were several Allen
families

Have you referred to my numerous files relevant to Carnone?

families and is a three point charge with Donaghmore and Convoy (see photos of

Valerie,

The website for the Presbyterian Church in Ireland says the current Minister of
Carnone is the Rev C. McCibbin and that services are at 9.45 on Sundays.

According to the PRONI guide to church records, early records for that church
are as follows:

Baptisms, 1834-1984; marriages, 1846-1916.

Henry Allen’s second marriage shows that at that date he was living in Carnone
(Carnowen) townland. His father Hugh was a weaver.

Labourers and weavers can be particularly difficult to trace as they often
moved about to follow available work and also sometimes their homes were of too
low a value to be noted in Griffiths. There are no Allen households listed in
Carnone in Griffiths in 1858. Indeed there were no Hugh Allens anywhere in
Donegal that year.

Hello All,
Thanks for adding me to the mailing list!
I am Valerie Stewart from California, USA

I am a descendant of Henry Allen and Barbara Stevenson, folks from Raphoe
Parish, County Donegal, according to the records we've seen.
I plan to visit County Donegal in September with my family and I am trying to
determine where exactly my great-great parents lived.
I have some church records for Henry Allen (born approx. 1814) that record his
first marriage - April 16, 1838 to Barbara Stevenson, by the Rev. John P.
Dickey at the Carnone, Presbyterain Church. Their 4 children were baptized
there also - from 1840 - 1846. (William, Henry James, Susan and Sarah).
Apparently Barbara died and in November 1850 Henry married Catherine Flood -
same church/parish location. After that they left for the United States.
Henry James Allen was my great- great grandfather who eventually settled in
Nebraska.

Is the Carnone Presbyterain Church still active? I would like to be able to
find it. The changing of names of locations since that time - early-mid 1800s-
is proving confusing for me, at least in finding what the current place names
are. If you could point me to some local resource/person, I should be glad of
the help.
 Many Thanks!
Valerie
