I think it unlikely that your forebear emigrated from Ireland because hunger, but the economic downturn and lack of opportunity and inability to own his own land in his native country. Generally, Presbyterians did not starve during the Famine years as their diet was influenced by their Scottish heritage; the Ordnance Survey Memoirs of the 1830s record regularly their reliance upon oatmeal, not the potato. So many thanks Len Swindley! This is my Allen family church. I attended Sunday services at the Church in September 2022 with my daughter. Our great-great grandfather migrated with his family in 1851 to escape famine and ultimately founded a town in northeast Nebraska in 1897 (Allen, Nebraska) after 8 years in Philadelphia and then Dane County, Wisconsin.
