And don’t forget about New Zealand, where some of my Ulster Irish ended up! In the early 1840’s they were mainly traders, whalers, sealers and ex soldiers, then like my Henrys, skipped over from Australia to follow the gold, set up hotels and make the most of the coaching business. Free passage was initially only offered to the literate, so numbers were small as passage was expensive. And of course New Zealand didn’t take this undesirable convicts! Cheers Verity
