If you are looking at a rural or semi rural area, you can find the
Griffith valuation of the mid to late 1850s and marked up maps at
askaboutireland.ie You can then use the revised valuations on the PRONI
website to follow through on the occupiers, using the relevant property
numbers from Griffith - the revised valuations go up to about 1930.
PRONI Website has been redone recently. Bill Macafee would have drawn
up instructions quite a few years ago, he passed away recently.

Valuation Town Maps and PRONI’s Valuation Records Collection:

Hi everyone, I have been trying to get to use the PRONI database (via
the web) to do what is suggested in Roger’s article, but having no joy.
Bill Macaffee’s document (referenced in this) is great, but even with
this I still cannot find the Admin menu suggested.
I think it perhaps comes down to the last comment about it being
different if you happen to be able to go in to Proni, vs the web!!
If this is so, and I am I right in thinking it is pretty hopeless to do
this work remotely? Should we not talk to Proni about making it work
better remotely?
Or can it work, but needs different instructions?
Some of the techniques in Bill’s process seem to be necessary with the
nightmare number of townlands and apparently the need to specify that to
make the Proni search work as he describes.
Seeing the massive building and facility and people there in the Proni
building, I can’t help feeling it should be able to be made more useful.
I have been to Ireland for 10 days in Feb 2026 (from New Zealand, bit of
a commute!) and of course went to Proni in Belfast, but could not do all
the enquiries while there. More info and ideas has been found from my
time in Strabane where my Ewings came from.
Some of you may have better access to other means to find some of my
queries, but if Macafee’s process would work remotely it would help a
lot of people.
I want to view the Valuation maps that correlate with the Valuation
revisions or original valuations that place my relatives on specific
properties. But maps will just not show on Proni. You can find a Proni
ref number, but it does not provide a viewable link.
The old-time Strabane Google maps data download from the blog, as
suggested works nicely, but is JUST missing the locations I am looking
at!
Anyone else finding this a problem or have ideas how I can get the maps?
Also, on the OSNI 1800’s maps there are references around the land I’m
looking at (Beechmount, off Melmount Rd)
that say: BM.106:6 is this not something meaningful? Any ideas on what
it points to?
