A friend who has the misfortune to live far enough north to need pre-heat built a pre-heater using a small propane fired turbine heater he got at the hardware store.  This little thing is about 8" dia and 18" long and uses one of those shaded pole fan motors like you see in small exhaust fans.  He made a sheet metal splitter and then two peices of flexible aluminum duct to position the heat at the cowl inlets.  Being in an un-electrified hangar he included in the package a little 125W inverter which these days only cost about $25.  This provided enough 110V for the fan motor.  He mounted the heater, a propane bottle and the inverter on a cheap two wheeler which can be rolled to the front of the plane and then left free standing while it heats the engine.  I have attached a picture of the heater used.
