I don't have the FARs handy either, but we put the NC numbers on my Ercoupe about 13 years ago, when I stripped and polished the plane and we redoped my wings.  As I recall, if the plane is at least 30 years old you can do this.

Just wondering,,, how many of you have the "NC" numbers still on your flying
aircraft? I've seen a few restored Stearmans with the giant "NC****" on the
tail or wing. Keep in mind these have been repainted and the NC was put back
on. Whats the skinny on this?? I'm sure it's spelled out in the FARs  I don't
have an FAR/AIM book handy. Anyone know??
