To the ones of you who are feeling insecure about
your wing spars. Here is a quick way to see if you
have a real serious problem. For years, when I go to
fly a strange plane I will take the wingtip and give
it a good shake, in all directions, the good one is
the big up and down, if the wing has a serious safety
problem it will show a crinkle sound and a spongey
movement, verses a ridged movement. If a wing folds
it will fold in a gust, so the up, down is what will
get weak, not the forward, aft. Another way to check
is to get a strong man to place his back of the outer
spar and pick up that side of the plane, looking down
the spar by someone else. If these little planes pass
these test they will fly safety for another 6 months.
If you are having a corrosion problem in a bad place
mix up some linseed oil and turpentine, and spray with
a small sprayer in all inspection holes, good. This
will stop it for a while, 3 to 5 years if it makes contact.
