I appreciate you taking the time to read my opinions on this list.
In the most fundamental sense you are all right, giving advice that is
not FAA approved may not be acceptable to many and perhaps most of all
not acceptable to the FAA.
In my particular case, being in Canada, and on the new Owner
Maintence catagory, I am in the position of being able to perform some
or all of my own maintenance on my own plane,much like the homebuilt
catagory. This will no doubt cause some nasty problems for those who
don't have the skills to look after their own plane or just neglect to
do so. There are always some problems when things are left to
individuals to sort out for themselves.
I guess the thing that rubs me the wrong way, is having someone
over me that has a vise like grip on what I do with my own belongings. I
know the FAA has evolved to make flying safe by insisting on correct
parts and proper maintenance. This has, on the whole,made us fairly safe
in the skies. I just don't like the unquestioned authority they have
with private individuals. I,as anyone who knows me will tell you,
certainly do not tolerate sloppy work or dangerous pratices on aircraft.
But there should be, in my opinion, a chance for people to be free from
the threat of prosecution or grounding because they have performed an
act on their plane that doesn't fit the rule books.
We all value our own precious skins and don't wish to hurt others,
but where has the pioneering, experimenting, sort it out for yourself,
spirit of America gone? I don't say this as a foreiner, I was born in
California!
If we had had this sort of regulation in the days of the early
settlers we would not be able to go out West until we had a gyro compass
and all the wagons had seat belts installed and the horses were
certified for long distance hauling. We just went and learned along the
way.
I know this doesn't help if you do get checked and found lacking,
you can be dead meat.
In the mean time I would strongly encourage the American aviation
family to start talks with FAA and tell them to "Let my people go".
Freedom is what the USA should represent. This means in the air as well
as on the ground or in the water. Rules are needed, but it really
bothers me to hear so many flyers that are petrified that they may be
caught for some small infraction and be "spanked" like a bad little
child.
In the end, I think most advice I give is at least semi sensible
and on the practical side, and the FAA can read all my writings and
gnash their teeth. Many Canadian coupers seem to be grateful for
practical suggestions and we share many new ideas that may not sit well
in more stayed surroundings.
Don't stop thinking America.
