Rhonda, Ruth and everyone,

We still haven't heard anything that gives even a hint of the cause of
Jack's crash. I heard from the airport manager at Terrell, Texas, where
we had the National Convention and the NTSB hasn't told him anything,
either.

I'll caution you that the true cause of the accident may never be known.
The causes of accidents like this strike very rarely. Often, there are two
or three causes that come together to overwhelm the redundancy built into
even small airplanes.

I was probably driving through McAlester (on my way back to Illinois)
within an hour or so of the accident, so I know the weather was good in
McAlester, that afternoon.

Some "probable causes" can be determined by the NTSB and FAA as they do
the accident investigation. These are things like failure of a component
of the engine. The agencies often do after-accident tests of the engine
that would show this kind of failure and of course they examine every part
of the plane.

Some causes can disappear, such as carburetor ice, which melts after the
accident, and we never know for sure. We, as well as the government
officials, have an intense desire to know what caused this accident. We
continue to fly our small planes and we want to avoid any accidents which
can be avoided.

If anyone has any information for you, from talking to Jack at the
convention, we'll ask them to contact you as well as the NTSB. You'll see
any discussion in these e-mails on the list, if you want. I know I talked
to some people for as long as half an hour at the convention, but now
can't remember their names. If you have a digital picture of Jack you can
e-mail us, I'd like to post it on the club website and it may help us
remember any discussions we had with him.

(If you choose, you can un-subscribe from the e-mail list by clicking on
the link at the bottom of any e-mail list message and the messages will
stop coming to your e-mail in-box - yet you or a friend can review them
anytime you like since they're archived on the topica website. If you
choose to do this, I or another friend can monitor the messages and pass
on any developments to you - just let us know.)

If there's anything we can do to help you, please let me or any of us
know. I have sat and imagined my feelings if I were to suffer the sudden,
surprising loss of my wife and the intensity of the pain is daunting - yet
this is not the reality. You have our sympathy and we offer what support
we can give.

My father died a long and lingering death from lung cancer at 56. I
deeply regret the months of pain he and my Mom went through. I also
deeply regret the many years of life he could have had but never got the
chance to enjoy. But I cling to, and offer to you, the thought that he
had 56 GOOD years of life - some difficult, some very good, but he lived
them well.

Hello Ed,

My name is Rhonda Register. I am Ruth & Jack McCall's daughter-in-law.
Mom asked me to write back to you and let you know what we know so far
about the crash.
Jack had stopped to refuel at the McAllister Airport on Sunday
afternoon, about 3pm. I am guessing, by all the news reports, that he
took off about 30-40 minutes later. His plane crashed about 1/2 mile from
the airport. Apparently the plane lost power. We don't have the final
report from the FAA or the NTSB....that will probably be quite a while,
but that is what they have said they are thinking happened. Jack died
from multiple injuries from the crash. His body has not yet been released
from the Tulsa Medical Examiner's office, but his body will be cremated,
as were his wishes, and the ashes sent here to mom in Kansas. A memorial
service will take place on Tuesday, July 3rd, 2001 at St. Theresa's in
Perry, Kansas.
We appreciate your e-mail to us. We are all still in a state of shock.
I was wondering if you or anyone else had talked with Jack in Terrell,
Texas about his plane and any problems he may have been having with it on
the way there? As far as we knew, the plane was flying just fine for him.
I had even talked with him on Saturday night, but he didn't mention
anything about it. Please, feel free to e-mail us again with any
information you or anyone else might have. If we hear anything in the
next few days, we will also let you know!
   Again , thank you.

Sincerely,
Rhonda

Hey, how come everyone's silent on the

Coupe crash in Oklahoma?

I'd have expected lots more people with

lots more to say, since we're all in the

dark out here.

John and everybody,

There¹s not a lot being said because we know nearly nothing. Most of what
we know is on the club website at http://www.ercoupe.org/news.htm (public
section). There¹ve been a couple of other posts with a little bit of
info. I¹ll try to draw it together and add it to the website info.

If any of you find facts, please let me know.
