After hearing that I have not been the only one to fly with my oil cap
off, I feel much better about this. I am not going to make it a habit,
so to aid my memory and my peace of mind, this morning I brought my oil
cap home, Carefully removed the gasket and set it aside. I cleaned off
all the old paint with a wire brush wheel on my bench grinder and after
rummaging through my drawers found a broken key from the back door that
I never threw away. (Yep, Packrats of the world rejoice!! ).
I ground the broken end nice and smooth and with my blowtorch and some
sheet metal solder, I soldered the broken key on the adge of the oil
cap. The broken tip slightly bent upwards to make a hook. I turned over
and re-installed the gasket. I have also installed a large rubber O'ring
(that was the drive belt of an old vacuum cleaner), with a clamp on the
oil filler tube so that when the cap is on tight, I can stretch the
O'ring over the hook and that way the cap cannot come loose by itself.
I will add pictures when I have painted it and it looks worthy enough.
