Cars really have gotten to be outrageously better since 1969 (best year for an E-Type IMHO). Yes, that tranny is holding you back, as it's a piece-of-junk Detroit-made performance killer. Your XKE would be a lot faster without it. Sad thing is today's econo-box can often out run and out handle the performance sedans of a quarter-century ago. Nonetheless, I too am a devotee of the E-type, having babysat a ragtop for a year at age 18 (and then had to keep it running in the ensuing months). Sweet machine, and as Manly said 'the best crumpet-collector known to man.'
