If it was a 172 with the light in the nose-bowl and a 28-volt electrical 
system chances
were the landing light burned out within 60 seconds of flipping the switch

on anyway.
Try as you might, it was nearly impossible to keep these things going for 
even a few
hours.

Supposedly the new Q-series bulbs with the round (so you don't have to
worry about orientation) quartz filaments are better. However, I put a
Q4509 in the right landing light of N99387, and it was dead in less
than an hour of operating time. 25 bucks down the drain. Sent a
nasty-gram to GE, we'll see if they send me a new bulb.

Still, I like the Q-beams. It is substantially whiter and more focused
than the straight 4509 that is on the other gear leg. But if they're only
going to last 3 hours, I'll go back to the $9.00 incandescent.
