Well, I did it. The Coupe is history. A gentlemen from Phoenix
decided he couldn't live without it, and since I can't fly legally after
the end of this month, I sold her. I told him to contact the list, and as
he's quite computer literate, you all will most likely hear from him.
Name's Greg Colvin. Be nice to him, as he's nicer than I am.
Departed Provo, Utah, Friday afternoon about 12:30. Headed straight
for Mesquite Nevada. About 2/3 of the way there, I knew I was going to
have problems. Murphy's Law! It was a 3 hour flight, and I had a 2 hour
bladder. Managed to stretch it out (literally), and made it OK. The only
real problem; one of the set screws on the frequency control knob on the
radio came loose, and I couldn't change channels. On the ground, the
Airport manager loaned me a pocket knife to tighten it back up.
Fueled her up, and took off for Kingman, Az. Flight out over Lake
Mead, and the south tip of the Grand Canyon, was beautiful, and
uneventful. Landed Kingman for fuel. Took off for the last leg of
journey. Kingman to Prescott, and down I-17 to Deer Valley Airport. The
90 miles to Kingman was over beautiful forest land. No roads, and
mountains everywhere. The Coupe was running beautifully, but I was still
nervous. She handled it with ease. Down I-17 I contacted Deer Valley
approach, and they brought me in with no problems. I hadn't been out of
my home turf for 25 years, and hadn't used the VOR's or a the nav side of
the radio in the same amount of time. Also hadn't gone into a controlled
airport for the same 25 years. I did do an extensive flight plan,
including phoning the tower to get all the particulars. It served me
well, as I didn't get lost, and didn't get the airport guys PO'd at me.
Next day, I took the new owner up for a familiarization flight. He'd
owned a Coupe 25 years earlier, but hadn't flown in that interim period.
He was rusty, but he'll be OK. He wanted to fly left seat, so on the
second flight up, I moved to the right hand side. Didn't see any problems
with this. All went well, until we returned to Deer Valley. I helped him
around the pattern, and got us on the ground. We then turned south to
taxi to their tie down. We had to cross runway 25L to get there. The
tower told us to hold short of runway, I acknowledged, and then gold Greg
to stop. He let her slide beyond the yellow line the length of the Coupe.
The tower hollered Ercoupe 405, STOP!! I was also yelling for him to
stop, and guess what! You can't hit that brake pedal when you're on the
right side. We did get stopped short of 25L, but then had to call the
tower for the butt chewing. I took it, and assured them that I'd not
cause the trouble again. Hope Greg gets an instructor to get him current
with both the flying and the radio.
Anyway folks, I'm without wings. I'll stay around for the
entertainment, and to keep you all straight. Think I'll go home now and
cry.

Larry
