----[Please read http://ercoupers.com/disclaimer.htm before following any advice in this forum.]---- Sabastian,
While the picture on the Coupers site is really pretty, the coupe was never certified on floats. That plane was the test plane that ERCO was utilizing for CAA ( FAA) flight tests. Because the control limits had to be modiified in order to get the float coupe onto the step, and in the air, spin tests were required. During spin tests, severe buffeting occurred - supposedly from the floats, and an aeliron departed the airplane, the CAA test pilot bailed out and the airplane was destroyed. There is an interesting recount of the incident in "Ercoupe, A Touch of Class, by Saletri, page 209, and in Coupe Capers, Vol # 6, Number 12, May, 1978 : Letter from Dave Kenney to Coupe Capers. Dave Westfall was the pilot who survived the parachute trip. I understand that Erco never again attempted to certify the coupe on floats, even tho much was made of how much fun the SeaCoupe was. (prior to spin tests). The ERcoupe is certified on skis, tho.
