Not to change the subject, but; Prior to my annual, I had started
having a serious shimmy upon landing. Taking off, no problem, but
coming in and landing it would wobble like crazy. Couldn't figure what
was wrong. Checked the front wheel, and all seemed fine. No bearing
problems, and everything was tight. So, I checked the steering
linkage. All seemed well there. One of the ball joints was loose, but
tightening it up didn't help. Had the annual, and the AP found a bad
bearing in the left main gear. He replaced it, and I had high hopes of
smooth landings. NOT! As I was about to fly it to Phoenix, for the
new owner, I didn't want it to bounce around on him. I can't help it, I
just want things done right. So, I had the mechanic take it in and
balance the nose wheel. Wow, now it's as smooth as a baby's bare butt.
I had no idea that a wheel out of balance would create a serious
shimmy. Just thought you all might want to know, as nobody seemed to
have much idea of what to do.
