Anthony wrote, "If the rules weren't any good, why trust the people who made them up?" Just one comment. WE made up the rules, in a manner of speaking. WE the public didn't want to part with our pocket knives, our Leatherman tools, our knitting needles... etc... when going aboard a plane. The FAA has KNOWN this was a possible threat for years, but like all our freedoms, the cost-benefit was weighed...it was a politically sensitive issue... and thus, we were able to carry our knives aboard. Until Sept. 11. Hell, who figured hijackers would use KNIVES? These creeps hit us in a chink in the armor-- We have trained and concentrated on explosive devices and "weapons"... i.e., guns, improvised guns, cell phone guns, zip guns... hand grenandes, pipe bombs, laptop-bombs, on and on. The only knives that were stopped from going on were "hunting knives" with blades over 4", or "menacing in appearance" knives such as those with serrated blades and unusual shapes. Box knives WERE prohibited... yet they are very easy to sneak aboard. Still are today. A box knife in a carry on bag don't look like much on X-Ray. Lots of things have changed, and it "ain't over yet". As a supervisor of Airport Police, I am pretty close to all this folks. The rules change almost daily. There is a lot of reactionary activity and it will take some time until all this settles down and smooths out. We have the military presence here and I was informed today that come October 5 they will be armed with 5.56mm light weapons. On a happier note, was able to fly N3201H about three hours, 12,000' + over the Idaho backcountry over the weekend. I have some great photos to share with you all 'soon as I get them downloaded. Have a Great Day, everyone!
