Jon,

Interesting comments, - Appreciate your sharing...Wonder why some engines
have this problem, while others don't seem to ??? Perhaps the location of
the scoop housing to nose bowl clearance ???? I often thought I would
close this gap with a seal, to better create a higher pressure
differential in the engine compartment, and improve cooling...But running
hot has never been a problem either; --- but I never have.

However I have never had an iceing/ mixture problem with my coupe for
over 20 years of ownership. (except, see below).

My air scoop does sit about 1/2 - 3/4 inch back from the nose cowl,
perhaps releiving some of the forced air pressure.... I think from a
theoretically perspective the ram air should not create a problem as the
pressure is compensated by pressure on the float level, maintaining a
proper mixture ( so the book says.)

I did have one incident that seemed like what you describe, but it was due
to the carb heat flap being improperly mounted on the carb side of the
shaft. one bolt came loose, and when I hit a gust, the flap flopped up and
cut off all air to the carb... Pulling the carb heat control fixed it, and
the engine ran perfectly as I immediately landed. On landing I found the
flap was loose - only one loose bolt stil holding the flap. Previous
owner's damage to the housing had been repaired, and the flap re-installed
on the wrong side of the shaft !...and lost bolt allowing the flap to flop
into position of cutting off all air flow.. I quickly fixed this, placing
the flap on the outside of the shaft with new bolts, and have had no
further problem.

This was Mom's first flight!!!!! She didn't recognize it as a problem, but
scared the hell out of me!...

Wonder if any one still has the Automatic Carb heat assy still
operative????

Appreciate all your comments.

Regards,

Harry Francis
