Yesterday we received good news. The Navy and the FAA have finally
agreed on the size of the TFR surrounding the Naval Submarine Base here
at Kings Bay. This TFR was originally 5 nm radius to 4,999 feet
altitude and encompassed the airport, closing it down. Effective 9:00
a.m. Tomorrow 3 December the TRF will be reduced to 2 nm radius and
2,999 foot altitude. This will allow 4J6 to reopen with several
revisions to the flight patterns. Runway 04 is the one that points
towards the base and aircraft must turn 90 degrees within 1/2 mile from
the end of the runway (5000' long). Runway 13 will now have a right
hand pattern and runway 31 will now have a left hand pattern. The new
TFR will probably become a Prohibited area soon and over flights of the
base outside of the TFR/prohibited area will not be permitted.
The FBO operator has kept his door open since they shut down the airport
on Sept. 11 th keeping busy by stripping and painting several aircraft
and doing some engine work carried in to him by local pilots etc. is
gearing up to reopen again.
This successful effort was accomplished by dedicated work of the local
Mayor, city manager, airport authority and a commission funded by the
Governor of the State. The head of the commission and several other
members happen to be pilots.
So !! if you are in the area, please drop in as soon as you can and
support our local FBO and thank him for hanging around
