For someone longing to own an airplane and discouraged by the $35,000 or more that most modern (less than 30 years old) aircraft list for, the Ercoupe's lower asking price is tough to resist, so tough that prospective buyers don't want to accept the fact that owning an Ercoupe is about preserving a vintage classic. For a few buyers, the two objectives are compatible and they approach Ercoupe ownership fully expecting to restore and preserve a half-century old classic. Some buyers, however, see the Ercoupe as a cheap alternative to a Cessna 150 or Cherokee 140. They are the ones most likely to be disappointed, or worse, get into trouble. They need to realize that, like buying a car, if they are drawn to the history, charm, classic good looks, and admiring stares of other drivers, then owning a 1948 Plymouth coupe is worth the care, attention, and expense required to keep it in sound operating condition. Expecting to acquire one cheap for the daily 25-mile commute, and then being outraged to discover a rusted frame or encounter an unexpected breakdown, makes as much sense as the complaints on this disgruntled message board. That's the message that needs to be conveyed to potential owners, whether for a 1948 Ercoupe or Plymouth.
