Most likely the fluid is coming out the filler hole. No matter how low
the fluid gets in the gear, it will not sag and droop one wing. The
fluid is only there to provide a damping action as the gear is
compressed on landing. If the o-ring is cut or damaged it can leak oil
out the filler cap, which is not an oil tight fitting. Make sure the
rubber stop on the gear is OK and not letting the gear come down too
far, which can cut the o-ring as it passes the filler hole. The rubber
stop should be removed and the gear fully extended[ by jacking the plane
up] before filling the gear, to allow the oil to get into the bottom of
the cylinder, and not be stopped by the o-ring. If the rubber stop is OK
, the only way the oil can get out is if the o-ring is damaged.
Replacing this is quite simple and inexpensive. If you have the plane
jacked up so the wheel's hanging free, swing it up by hand and check the
damping action. There should be a fairly slow squishing action as you
lift. If there is very little resistance by hand, there will be almost
no damping as the 1200 lb plane bangs down on it. Through
experimentation I have found that 90w gear oil works better than
anything. Whether it's just my own shocks or not, but it went from a
firm bang onto the ground to a noticeably softer touch down as the gear
oil squished through the orifices much more slowly. I of course can not
recommend anyone in the U.S. to do this, but it does seem to make a
marked improvement. When working on the main gear, it can get quite oily
everywhere so be VERY careful to protect the brakes and discs from oil.
Hope this is of some help.
