--- Begin Message --- Title: Y2K and the "Rope Trick"Happy New Year. Working for an electric utility, I spent New Year's Eve
and on into the wee hours of the morning in a command center waiting for
the lights to go out. Nothing happened. So, I was anxiously awaiting
New Year's Day afternoon to take my Coupe out for its first flight of
the 21st Century. Also, it would be my daughter-in-law's first Ercoupe
flight. When we pulled the starter, the Coupe started right up, but was
running rough. I thought it might be a plug fouled. However, I could
never get the static runup above 1900 rpms. So, I knew I had a problem.
One of my good hanger buddies said my couple wasn't Y2K ready. A turn
through on the prop indicated the real problem was a stuck valve. (All
last week the main topic was stuck valves, the rope trick, Marvel
Mystery Oil and AvBlend). The next day, we unstuck the valve using the
"rope trick", shot some MMO around the valve, added some to the fuel,
put her back together and she started up and ran fine. I flew her
around the field for about 30 minutes and everything checked out
okay.Everyone on my field swears by MMO, so I'm buying a gallon tomorrow
and going to add it to my fillups. Plan to also use a little auto gas.
