I concur 100%. I take care of a flying club which flys 200+ hours a month
and we use Phillips 20w50 XC with no problems we have one 182 which has
over
2500 hours since major with out a top and no problems. And speaking of 100
LL we use it and the plugs need a good cleaning about every 200 hours. Jim

Subject: Re: [COUPERS] oil

If you can find some non-detergent auto oil there is no important
difference.

The 'detergent' in auto oil permits the use of calcium which has been
accused
of forming hot spots from deposits in the cylinder heads of air cooled
engines. The AD oils in air cooled engines are ashless - dispersant.
Calcium is the element which forms the ash deposits.

Mobile 1 oil would make a good substitute for AV-1 if it were not for this
little detail about calcium deposits.

There is likely some auto oil in use in some air cooled engines but I am
paying about $2.00 / qt of Phillips X-C 20/50 so there is little incentive
to
use auto oil at $1.00 / qt.

Unlike car gas and MMO which have a good history in airplanes, auto oil
doesn't seem worth the trouble.
