Georgia: Your questions are more important than you might think. One thing I learned when I became a mentor for a student pilot on AOPA's mentor program was that I had forgotten most of what I had learned in ground school. It is not only good for you to learn the answer for the first time, but it is invaluable for us "old timers to review." The responses on your fuel question have been right on. I had an interesting problem with fuel as a student pilot. On a cross country to Monterey my instructor and I ate lunch and then got fuel. After filling we checked for water and left. About 10min into the flight (over the mountains) the cessna started sputtering. I was glad I was with my instructor. She immediately took over and tried everything to no avail. We circled over a fire road just in case. The good news was that it cleared up by itself. The prognosis was water in the fuel. The moral is to get fuel before lunch so the water has time to settle to the bottom of the
tank.
