We would probably do it better than a mechanic. My Ercoupe is like a
museum
of dumb mechanics tricks. The exhaust gaskets that the guy put on about
last
January were leaking, yet he still signed off the annual. Then I take the
jugs off and reveal the scarred connecting rods due to other fools'
carelessness. Safety wiring is a challenge to some of these folks, as
evidenced by the mess on mine. Actually, everything that the previous
mechanic logged as having been done (and he didn't log much) was screwed
up.
At least I heard he is quitting the business. Maybe I am just in a bad
mood
today, but I am going to say it - they aren't getting the people they need
in
mechanics. It should be for people with more than an average ability.
They
charge like doctors anyway in some cases. I went to about the oldest
mechanics school in the country and the people there are basically the
ones
who couldn't get into college or who couldn't get into the military. Yes,
on
some occasions their scores were truly so low that the Army wouldn't take
them. Come FAA test time, they do get through! As long as they paid the
bill
for $15k a year. I wouldn't let these people near my plane no matter how
much
experience they have or even if they can convince somebody to give them an
IA.
Yet I tell people I have a license and they act like that means I ought
to
know something about working on planes. hehehe You can bet they are
going
to go beat down this owner maintenance proposal big time! Glen Ward
