Bob-
I put an experimental airplane in a field a couple of years ago.
Had engine trouble and looked for a landing place.
Field was newly plowed and my nose gear dug in and collapsed. Airplane
flipped over and landed on canopy. I was in a 3 point harness and was
unhurt.
I also moved the plane. FISDO fellows from Lubbock Texas came and
looked at the plane and filed a report. Called me and told me to expect
the forms from NTSB and to expect my hand to be slapped for moving plane.
NTSB sent forms but since incident was an off field landing due to engine
problem and was not related to failure of the aircraft, no action was
taken.

In case you want the real story

On Saturday I flew N99590 to the Flabob Airfaire in Riverside, CA. At
4:00Pm
I departed for Apple Valley and climbed to 2300' over San Bernardino, CA.
As
I neared the center of the city the Coupe (415D with C85) developed a bad
vibration and clanking noise. I tried carb heat and mixture as well as
priming motor all to no avail. I diverted toward Rialto, CA Airport 5
miles
distant in the haze. All of a sudden at 1300' the motor clanked loudly
2-3
times and stopped dead. The only non populated part of the area nearby
was
a small pasture(900' across) nearly under me. I aimed for it very
steeply
and flared out touched down 300' into the pasture, and bounced once. I
then
stood on the brakes and spun the wheel but the pasture had short wet grass

and I slid through a barbed wire fence with railroad ties for posts.
N99590
sustained a destroyed left wing, damaged right wing, entire empennage torn

off and held by control cables and bent prop. Pretty much a total wreck.
I
exited plane very very fast and was greeted by pasture owner who was as
scared as I was.

I layed down in the seat as I hit the fence and got only a minor bruise
from
yoke. No time for MayDay or anything but hang on and fly plane to ground.

Fire fighters and police were on scene with paramedics inside of 4 minutes

and were great.

The reason I am writing this is to make sure that all on this mailing list

know the real story and to let them know I will be looking for another
Coupe
in the near future. (If my wife will stop yelling at me) Sheeeesh, you
think it was dangerous as driving a car or something !!!

Now comes the problems. NTSB called and chewed me out for moving the
plane.
It was leaking gas and oil and setting 10-15' from a busy railroad track.

The police and fire dept said it must be moved immediately. The NTSB said
no
one but they can authorize an accident being moved. Ever try and get
anyone
at nearby airports at 5:30Pm on Saturday nights. I felt like lying down
and
telling them I was in shock and do whatever they wanted to with it.

Went to church this morning and thanked god personally !!!
