I'd say it depends on how well your brain rotates the map image to fit
the real world.  
People's brains vary in this ability.  I do it VERY well, some people
can scarcely do it at all. From the time I look at the map and see it's
position on my mental view of the world to raising my head to look out
the window, the rotation has happened.

My only problem with orienting the map to match the terrain is in doing
the rotation to match the map/real-world image to my mental map of the
whole world which has north up. Probably a matter of practice.
