OK. Here's the scoop. First, Franklin's now cost $10,000.00 plus
accessories. About 2800 to make it go putt putt. Plus the prop of
course. 120 horse power. The Franklin folks in Ft. Collins, Colo. have
looked at getting an STC for Coupe's, but have given it up. Not because
it was not practical, but because they don't believe there's enough
demand from Coupers to make a return on their investment. Their
feeling is that there aren't enough people willing to invest the
necessary bucks into a $12,000.00 airplane to fit the Franklin into it.
The Franklin engine, by the way, will bolt directly up to the engine
mount for an 0-200. Thus engine mount is no problem. The Franklin is
also dimensionally about the same as the 0-200, so it would appear that
it would fit directly into the engine compartment of a Coupe. They
believe that about all you'd have to do is alter the exhaust, and it'd
bolt right in. Also, they have sold one of the engines to a Couper down
in Colorado Springs. As of yet, they don't think he has installed it.
They wouldn't give me his name, but they will be talking to him in a
week. They will give him my phone number, and hopefully he will get in
touch with me. I told him that several of the members of this list were
interested in helping push this project along. I'll let you all know as
this progresses. By the way, the engines used to cost $7999.00. All of
these lower cost engines are gone. I suspect that even at $12,800.00
fully accessorized, it's still a good bargain.
