Coupers: We were able to leave 29 Palms about 0645 and head for Oakdale. The wind was still blowing about 15 mph when we took off, but it was right down the runway, 26. A climb to 8500 feet cleared the mountains, and our heading of 313 meant that we did not have to deviate too much for the restricted areas. It was clear, and the visibility had to be over 50 miles until we got to the mountains west of Edward's. There the clouds were down in the mountain valleys and the aircraft around Bakersfield were all getting IFR clearances to descend into Bakersfield. We climbed up to 10,500 to clear a military use area, and you could see the haze and clouds down in the San Joquain Valley. When we descended, after clearing the mountains, we found that the area to the north of Bakersfield was VFR. So we stopped in Delano for fuel, and continued north to Oakdale at 6500 feet. When we landed in Oakdale, we had accumulated exactly 40 flight hours and traveled 3853 miles since leaving 52FL two weeks ago. We were met by Darrel Meeks of Modesto who is a fairly new Couper like me. He learned to fly in his Coupe, and got his license last year if my memory serves me correctly (that memory of mine seems to be missing on a cylinder or two lately for some reason). Darrel gave us a ride into town and we started the rental car saga all over again. Having a reservation does not automatically get you a car. I guess they are overbooking like the airlines do. I ended up waiting until after 5 PM to get a car. We hurried back to the airport to get our gear, and then went out with my sister, Linda, and her husband Ronnie, to look at their 58 Chevy Bel Air (disassembled in the paint shop) and have dinner. Another long, but safe, day draws to a close.
