Above all else, Coupedom owes Robert Swanson, his lovely wife
Sheila, and Betsy Weick a great debt of gratitude for putting together
the College Park event. Robert ran himself ragged to make everything
come off as smoothly as possible, and to make it a rich experience at
a very affordable price. He succeeded beyond wildest imaginings. As I
type this, I'm proud to say that Robert is my EOC director. I can't
imagine
a more capable and dedicated leader.

The CGS staff were wonderful, too. Made us feel completely welcome.
This is THE place to land when visiting the DC area by small airplane.

I flew down in the right seat of Leslie's beautiful N161LH 'Flying
Colors' Alon, doing navigator duty for ourselves and 'flight leader' Pete
Hogan. The weather gods gave us what was arguably the best flying
day of Y2K. Discretion being the better part of valor, we broke formation
at the WOOLY intersection so as not to arrive at a strange airport in
loose formation.

We arrived at a 'Fiddler's Green' of Ercoupedom, with around forty planes
on the field at mid-day Thursday. I was struck by just how good most of
these coupes were. The 'average' Ercoupe at the fly-in was far better than
most of the planes you see at any GA airport in the US. The best 1/3
were nothing short of amazing. Then there are planes like Syd Cohen's and
George Frebert's, which are nearly beyond belief.

And the Coupers themselves! Rarely have I encountered such an upbeat,
spirited bunch of wonderful lunatics gathered in one place. It was great
to,
at least for a few days, feel a part of a majority rather than part of a
denigrated
minority. It was terrific to meet Syd, Percy, Maynard, George, Percy, Ed,
and
a host of the other list members face-to-face.

The ERCO factory tour and the Garber Facility (Smithsonion) tour were real
triumphs, and well worth while. Especially the latter, I thought.

We got smart, and took the last day of good weather to get home to New
Jersey and Connecticut on Sunday. It's well we did, as the weather here
in NJ this morning was haze, haze, and more haze, followed by haze,
followed by rain.

It was a good time, indeed.

Greg
