On RC planes, we used to fuel-proof with good old clear epoxy glue all over the firewalls. On a small enough area, you can just coat the whole thing. Seems like that would work fine with the cork as well. Roll it around in the mix and it from a string to dry. Wear rubber gloves... ...epoxy rashes are no fun. If you want to be tidy, paint it on with an acid brush. You could buy some of the WEST system resin at your local West Marine or BoatUS store (see the web for addresses), but I suspect that the clear epoxy that comes in the syringes would be easier to get and quicker.
