Hi John,
If you live out in the country and want to do this on your "back
forty", I'd go around and ask all
of your neighbors if they'd have any objections if you started landing
your plane in your "back
pasture". After you've done it a few times go around again and ask them
all if it bothers them any.
If all is okay thus far, I'd just start using it on a regular basis
and try not to fly directly over
any houses. Let the neighbors know that you're willing to take them for a
ride once in a while. (Good
'PR' goes a long way.)
The other way would be to go to your County Court House, land use
deptartment and see what they say
about it. If your county is anything like mine is, after you ask that
question you can get up off the
floor and go home with your tail between your legs and wish you'd stayed
in bed this morning.
I own an airport that was built prior to WWII.. Many years later a
new department was 'invented' by
the county which has to do with land use and 'zoning'. They decided that
since there were a lot of farms
around the area that they would zone the airport land as 'agricultural'.
The airport (and existing hangars) are 'grandfathered' in so they can
stay but I'm not allowed to
erect any additional hangars or in any other way "Further the 'missuse' of
Agricultural Land". So, over
half of my land is unusable, all I'm allowed to do with it is pay taxes. I
don't have the money to hire
an attorny and try to fight them and get the property 're-zoned, so I have
only 10 hangars on it when I
have room to put two long rows of T-hangars on the other side of the
runway. This would not only help
my income, but there just 'aren't enough hangars' around this area and a
lot of planes are sitting
outside because there just aren't any hangars to be rented.
Don't ask me what I think about this county and the way it's run!
There are several other small
airports in this area with the same problem, but none of them are as old
as mine.
I wish you the best of luck John, let us know how you make out.

BTW, where are you located?
