Paul, my guess is that it was removed because it bleeds heat like crazy
in the summer, even with the cable pulled shut.  Erco made a baffle seal
kit for the heater door to seal it tight when not in use, but I haven't
seen the kit offered by anyone.  During warm weather I have to remove
the hose from the muffler cover and tape it shut with aluminum tape. 
Otherwise it is unbearable in the plane.  It really pours the heat in
during the winter months here in South Dakota, though.  Although this
year I haven't needed to use it very much.
