I believe Itazuke is on Honshu (not to far from Tokyo?), and was one of
MANY
MANY bases there up until the early 70's.

I was in Japan from 1963-1966 as a dependent... my dad was in the Air
Force. I
was in 5th, 6th and 7th grade at the time. We lived on 4 different bases
in the
that time span, and in 5 different housing units.

Green Park - was the original apartment complex we were in... it had
previously
been a WWII airplane manufacturing building... complete with underground
tunnels
to the nearby runway.

Washington Heights - near down town Tokyo, we lived here until it was
turned
over to the Japanese to use as the Olympic village for the 1964 Olympics.
Is
now Yoyogi park... immediately adjacent is the Meji Shrine.

Kanto Mura - In Chofu, western suburb of Tokyo, was a new housing base
built in
1962-1963... was the former site of a large hydroponic garden operation
that
grew vegetables for soldiers in Korea. Operated as a base from 1963 until
sometime in the early 70's. Has a general aviation airport immediately
adjacent
that is still in operation. 99% of the building are now torn down, and
the
area has been redveloped.

Fuchu AFB - In Fuchu, immediately adjacent to Chofu/Kanto Mura, so also a
western suburb of Tokyo... this was HQ for the 5th Air Force. A good
portion of
this base is still in use by the JDF (Japanese Defense Force)

Please visit the http://chofu.org/ site to see information from
several
hundred other dependents that lived and went to school there. There are
also
links to several other "brat" japan web-sites.

Tachikawa was another big base with huge runways not to far away from
Chofu and
Fuchu. We went to the Base Exchange there quite a lot... but never lived
there.
I do not know its fate or current status.

If I remember correctly, Itazuke was not that far away... as I remember
the
buses that ran from base to base would take you there. Of course I could
be
completely wrong. Hey, I was a kid.
But if you could see Mt Fuji from the airport... you weren't to terribly
far
from where I was. Mt. Fuji was
quite visible (and very scenic) from our apartment in Chofu.

Brian Bowman (currently in Pennsylvania) - Who was ready to buy an
Ercoupe
this summer... but then learned his company was going to be a part of a
big
merger, so is unsure of his employment at the moment.

I LOVE this message group!

I have learned so much about Ercoupes, Alons, Mooneys, rag vs Alum, etc
etc
