To Doug Stierman: Experimental wing coverings? DeCertifying your airplane? Save yourself the disappointment of having a wing inferior to a certified fabric covered wing. What could be easier, or much less expensive if at all, than certified fabric covering and attachment with fabric rivets. It is smoother than that experimental kit 6061T6 and AVEX rivets. I've seen that on the kit planes you refer to. Good fabric covered Ercoupe wings are much better shaped and smoother.
Why install an experimental water cooled automobile engine when you can find a little Continental, in some condition, which actually fits your airframe. Ultimately, it will be less expensive much easier than decertifying and modifying your airplane. We are all on tight budgets but you will spend just as much trying to make these "adaptations." Regarding the inexpensive overhaul of a Suburu vs. a Continental, you will have to do LOTs of flying in an Ercoupe to come to a point where you wear out the engine. Most of us flying behind Continentals in good condition will not wear them out. What I am saying, you will have to fly about 180,000 miles. I don't fly my coupe that much. It's nice to think and plan; but, be practical and restore your Ercoupe less expensively and safer using widely available Certified coverings and engine. You can even take a partner who provides the Continental engine and cover the wings, sharing expenses including hangar.
