Warren, the reason ercoupes are not worth much on the airplane market is
people
keep putting old junk parts on them. Old spar caps, old gas tanks, old
mags, old
carbs, old goodyear brakes. Half of the 6000 or so planes built are not
around
anymore because alot of owners have been putting junk on them for years
and
crashed them. New spars and 15 gal tanks would cost about $12,000. Thats
not
alot of money to have a good plane for the 21 century. You get the money
back
when you sell it. You know as well as anybody, gas is always leaking out
of the
old tanks, from the caps, leaky header tank, rotten wing tanks. holding
water in
the header tank, fuel pump quit. This is why most ercoupes out there have
less
than 3000 on them, their always breaking down or apart in some garage or
hanger
because they where crashed because of poor maintance. The point I'm
trying to
make to the group is by the time you rebuild alot of junk parts you can
buy new
for the same money. When my Alons need engines insted of spending
$5000-$6000
for a rebuild, why not spend $9,000 for a new franklin, buy the new 3
blade prop
for the $1,000. $10,000 right. Now I sell the old 90hp with the old
prop to
someone for $5,000-$6,000. So for $4,000-$5,000 I have new. Same with
the
tanks, by the time you buy new 9 gal for $550-950 each and a new header
tank
your pretty close to the same money. Why skimp on the brakes, clevelands
are
cheap so are the pads. I'm alot like you Warren, I don't have alot of
money,
just alot of dreams. gene
