Gang, my next question: Do I really need an oil cooler? Has anyone removed one and seen a great difference?
Also, I know it makes sense logically, but is there any real data that scientifically shows that adding an oil filter increases engine life? Thanks so much, everyone, for your helpful comments on my oil filter problem. As a bit of general info, if you find a Continental made adapter that goes in the oil screen hole, it has no AD, and does not have to be inspected. The troublesome Cessna model has the word "CESSNA" stamped on the bottom. The Continental also has a slightly different shape, with an angle that may make the filter easier to get to. I have not looked into this, as I can only dream what Continental probably wants for one. One thing I have noticed here on the group is that lots of folks have the El Reno, but STILL change their oil every 25 hours or so. Since we are not flying fleet or rental aircraft, maybe the option of keeping the engine as is and changing the oil more frequently is better. If the filter is added, and if you change the oil at 50 hours as they say you can, a 100 hour a year pilot is only changing the oil twice a year! I feel that the oil gets way too old and acids and sulfides build up. It makes more sense to have the added filter if the plane is flying 25 hours a week! My quick drain makes changing the oil a snap, Changing the filter, however, has always been a difficult, nasty job because of it's poor location. I sure wouldn't miss it.
