Hey Pete:

Done that on the Cherokee.  Works good.  Around rivets you will
need to take a pin and make a small hole, the rub the air out
with a tooth brush.

However, I now have also learn that our friends at the FAA
will ground you on a ramp check for this.  Seem that they believe
that a transfer type N number will be easy to remove
when the airplane is stolen.  Of course white paint can
also cover up a N number, go figure.
