If the Sport Pilot certificate were approved with the self certification
of
the medical requirement we could always do an STC to lower the certificate
maximum gross weight to 1200 pounds. It would be a simple thing to do. It
would make many Coupes effectively single seaters but it sure beats
walking. Remember it is far easier to get a weight changed in an existing
rule such as increase the Max gross weight from 1200 to 1300 so that many
great old aircraft can be utilised until the manufactures can come up with
great new aircraft. These would include J-3 Cubs, Luscombes, Champs and of
course Ercoupes. The EOC and this group should get solidly behind this and
get it done. The more people that contact their Congressmen and Senators
the greater the chance it will happen. Keep in mind it was Mrs. Dole's
Department of transportation that stopped it last time. Our FAA was
willing
but the DOT stopped it because they did not understand it.

I know that there are fine younger members and owners in the EOC and on
this list but I would be willing to bet that the average age of most
active
Ercoupe owner is over 45 and that means that many of us will have medical
problems that will require the forbearance of the FAA or will stop us from
flying. I may be just a little of centre but I feel if you are fit and
safe
enough to drive a car to the airport you are fit enough to fly light
aircraft for the FUN of it. It is high time we got the FAA straight on
this
issue. It is an election year so lets use the system to get what we all
will need one day to keep flying fine safe and FUN aircraft.

Best regards,
Vern
