Any hints for where to look for a solid O-200 would be appreciated. Bad news from the A&P. It appears as though 2906H's C85 engine is on borrowed time. We found quite a bit of bronze in the oil filter. It appears as if it's coming from the starter pinion gear (a sort of idler) that spins all the time on a dead shaft at the top of the accessory case. The shaft is pretty worn, as if it was returned to service when it should not have been, so it's chewing up the bushing in the idler gear's bearing. Hence the bronze in the filter.
To replace the shaft, you have to pull the engine, pull the cylinders, and crack the crankcase open. The A&P's take on it is that a C85, especially one that shows signs of a less than sterling major, is a real can of worms in such an operation. It seems to make sense to think about getting a good O-200 up there if we're doing that kind of surgery. Ideas? Greg
