Joa, Great about your Reno Trip.... Two things.... Yes at 8500 feet you are running a very rich mixture....so if you are going to fly that high, I would install the mixture control....; and when flying
that high, one is tempted to firewall the throttle to get the best speed......not good, I think. At full throttle, the "economizer circuit kicks in to helo cool the engine,,,,by makjng it extra rich...needed for take-off and climb power ---but at cruise. one should be at 75% power setting (throttle postition) at which point leaning the mixture will work....I don't think you can overcome the economizer circuit by leaning, until it just quits.... The economizer circuit seems to be named wrong to me........What it does is provide a rich mixture at full throttle for engine cooling, and proper mixture at cruise....
