Looking at things purely from a cost perspective...........
If I take the Consumer Price Index and apply it to the
price of a 'coupe here is what I get.......
1940 CPI 14.0 coupe = $ 2,650 Price new
w/extras ??
1999 CPI 166.2 coupe = $ 31,436 Adjusted for CPI
Is this even relevant ? I dunno......
I might be tempted to buy a NEW plane for that dough....... However ,
the numbers shown below for OPERATIONAL EXPENSE require consideration
...
Average expenses for 150 hours

Insurance About right
800
Hangar Around here
1200
Fuel 150 hrs @ 5 = 750 @ 1.65
1238
Annual & Maint Probably low
2000
Engine & instrument fund $ 8 / hr x 150
1200
__________________________________________________________
Average cost per hour at 150 hrs / year $
42.92
( based on a 5 gal / hr coupe )
For modern craft add some accordingly.......
As I understand , These costs vary across the country.....
This has not yet taken into consideration tha actual cost of
the aircraft.
You might say you can disregard that due to the perception
that aircraft appreciate in value at such a high rate .
If you believe that .
My point here is that inexpensive aircraft do not necessarily mean
inexpensive flying hours , let alone time in type that can be
applied to further your rating . ( Which you will find does matter later )
For example , right now my total actual costs based on
150 hrs / year for a 70's Piper 180 w/ full IFR , Wet ,
Tanis heater , including insurance and hanger fee ,
is about $ 42 bucks / Hobbs Hr.
Just presented as food for thought , and as always ,
Your mileage may vary ...........
