Hi Joa,
The races are held at the former Stead AFB about 10 miles north of
Reno. The field will be closed all week but the main airport for the
Reno area is Cannon which is located at Sparks, the next town south of
Reno. (Actually Reno and Sparks appear to be joined). That is the
commercial airport so there will be some 'heavies' to contend with and I
imagine by Friday the parking there will be pretty full.
I go to the races every year and stay a week, but I always drive
so
I'll have transportaion when I get there. I can't help you on grass
strips (sand, more likely) but go to your local FBO and see if you can
locate a sectional for that area (you'll need it for your flight anyway)
and look for small airports in that area.

Good Luck and have a nice flight.

PS.... Go IFR (I Follow Roads), follow US 97 to Susanville, bank left
and follow US 395 to Reno. (Beware of that sharp left bank at Alturus,
don't over stress your wings.) :-)
