  IM(very)HO, the vortex generators have not gone anywhere because of 
the perception that they would cut down on top speed.  The main reason
a lot of persons buy/fly airplanes is because of the fast travel they
purportedly have (but see my future post anon).  To stick a bunch of
velocity-robbing, draggy dudes on the top of the wing, or any where
else for that matter, is therefore dumb.
  But maybe VGs help in the low speed regeme - by keeping the air 
attached to the top surface of the wing.  So - if one is not into
getting there fast, and would rather have the low speed control,
then VGs may be a way to go.  
  I am not an aeronautical engineer, and I do not play one on TV...
