The pilot did survive the crash. The plane landed on its nose and left wing before catching fire. The pilot died in the fire. He was trapped and couldn't get out. The Arlington newspaper covered the story. I gave my copy of the paper to the guys at the Vans booth. Bystanders did try to use extinguishers to put it out to no avail. So tragic.

A little more about the crashes at Arlington (AWO). I talked to a guy who saw
the RV6A crash. Apparently the only casualty in the actual crash was the
aircraft. The pilot survived the impact and was trapped inside the burning
wreckage. A bunch of bystanders had small fire extinguishers and got as close
as they could trying to get the fire out and talking to the pilot. This story
sends chills up my spine... to survive a crash only to be trapped in a
burning fusalage.
MY QUESTION IS... would a forced landing be best with an open canopy to
be able to jump clear or closed to keep debris clear of pilot.
