Check with others, my knowledge came from many sources and I am NOT a good enough source upon which to bet your life. ----- Summary: In a four lead egt, choose the hottest cylinder for your leaning adjustment. Be aware that the hottest cylinder may change with changes in airspeed, mixture and power. In a one lead egt, make your best guess on which cylinder to use and put the sensor of the egt there. I think we used the right rear. ----- In flight, choose your power setting at that altitude. Lean till you get the peak egt temperature. Richen the mixture till the temp drops 50 degrees for cruise. or Richen the mixture till the temp drops 100 degrees for max power. ----- After setting the leaning, further climbing is safe, it'll just give you a richer mixture. Descending below the altitude for which you set the leaning may make you too lean causing detonation and damage. On descent either continually re-lean or just push it to full rich. I just push it to full rich for descents. In any condition, occasionally re-check the leaning -- something may have changed. ----- On a Stromberg carb, I have to make small changes with my mixture and wait a moment to see the results. The results aren't instant. It is, however, very smoothly controllable. ----- I always recommend against the egt meters that cover 400 or 800 degrees in one sweep of the needle. I have a K-S single probe egt. Each gradation of the scale is about 1/4 inch and represents 25 degrees. The whole deflection is only a couple hundred degrees. I can easily set it within 5-10 degrees of my target. After the leaning adjustment, you turn a dial on the gauge so the needle is on the special mark -- then any deviation from the special mark is immediately apparent. Remember, the target is a certain number of degrees on the rich side of peak egt. My egt was low cost and the FAA rubber stamped the 337 with no fuss.
