Dad, Can you ask Mike if we can borrow his tent for next week? Is the plan to fly the T-bone to Sun n Fun on Thursday afternoon and camp Thursday night and Friday night? Do I need to get a taxi or rental car?
My flight info is Delta Express 10:15am arriving Orlando 12:15 on Thursday the 15th. I wasn't sure what all the logistics were. Just let me know? You did say you were flying down on Wednesday to checkout the plane? I get similar benefits from both in the form of their magazines--both informative but in different areas, but together they give a broad coverage of GA. I can't build a doghouse either, and I won't ever get into commercial aviation, but I like knowing about both. I find their articles to have more substance than the store bought magazines. I like the principle behind EAA and the congressional clout of the AOPA. I also find the AOPA web site and the availability of other benefits to be worth the price of membership. I was surprised that EAA was so much into production aircraft, but I find that to be a healthy mix with the experimental aircraft. I don't know that either organization does me more good than the other, although I utilize AOPA more. I'll continue to support both as long as they are actively and successfully supporting GA. Thanks for ALL your suggestions regarding which inexpensive GPS unit to purchase- I took it all into consideration and looked at *numerous* models before deciding on the Garmin 12 which was $146 at WalMart (where incidently I can bring it back up to three months from now if I change my mind.) This unit is only $50 more than the units that track 2 satellites instead of 12 plus it has tons of features including a map of waypoints that I can store. One nice thing about the G12 is that I can upload airport coordinates in from my PC and use them as waypoints (up to 500). It even has a feature that will even give me directions to one of 9 closest "proximity" waypoints which I can use if I need to find the closest airport in a hurry. I purchased a pc interface cable for $15 (including postage) and am going to download freeware for uploading waypoints. Compare this to the $90 that Garmin wants for their cable and software and its a pretty good deal. Now I just need to get a list of airport coordinates (I'm too lazy to input 500 coordinates by hand!) Would any of you folks happen to know of an electronic (on the net or perhaps a file you can send me) of airport gps coordinates for the west coast? Joa www.deschutes.net/~co291 "Vaircraft/CH-601 Building Page" _________________________ Oh ... if you think this is a nifty way to get a neat "aircraft" gps wait till you hear what I want to do with my gps and a palmtop. I found some software that will plot out *real time* my gps coordinates in a 3D topo picture. It will work on palm tops so basically I think I can hook my gps up to a WindowsCE palmtop and punch in my elevation (my gps doesn't have this feature- what do you expect for $150??!!! ;-) and I'll be able to have a 3D real time moving map. Pretty slick huh? Figure around $250 for the palmtop, $90 for the software, and $150 for the GPS and I've got myself a pretty nifty $500 GPS! Of course I haven't put this together yet so until I do don't quote me on any of this, and true to life it will never be as easy as I expect it to be! And then of course there's palmtops that have wireless internet access- real time satellite weather (doppler, visual, radar, temperature, local conditions, you name it) comes in handy when you're flying.... ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 09 Apr 1999 05:03:17 -0500 From: Mi Vida Loca <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: airport gps coordinates on the net? >Would any of you folks happen to know of an electronic (on the net or >perhaps a file you can send me) of airport gps coordinates for the west >coast? > >Joa Joa, If you will go to my WEB page you will find a link to "Paulo Santos' AirNav Airport Information", it will give you give you the coordinates and every other bit of info you will ever want on any given airport. <color><param>ffff,0000,0000</param>Dave 41 Charlie Dave's Ercoupe Page http://www.flash.net/~dmprosvc/dave </color>ICQ # 1388138 http://wwp.mirabilis.com/1388138#contactingme ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 09 Apr 1999 05:04:17 -0500 From: Mi Vida Loca <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: ercoupe day at the Museum of flight > Another factor is ATC. If you fly in formation only one aircraft should have it's transponder on anyway, so not having a transponder is a moot point if there is one aircraft in the flight with one operating. If you do intend on flying in formation I really suggest you sit down with everyone involved and learn the standard hand signals. Since you will have aircraft without radios you must have some means of communicating. Hand signals are very effective. Also please have each member know his position and understand his responsibility in formation. Formation is quite safe as long as you understand the basics and get a little experience. If all members are inexperienced I would suggest no more than 3 in a flight in a vee formation. Try to get together at least once for practice before trying to blast in for the real thing. If you are not familiar with formation flying and have no one in the group with experience contact me and I will be happy to supply you with the hand signals and fill you in on the! ! ! bas ics. <color><param>ffff,0000,0000</param>Dave 41 Charlie Dave's Ercoupe Page http://www.flash.net/~dmprosvc/dave </color>ICQ # 1388138 http://wwp.mirabilis.com/1388138#contactingme ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 09 Apr 1999 06:38:34 -0400 From: "Jerry Eichenberger" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: more on air use tax & MEDICAL Jim - I thoroughly sympathize with you. The airplane impacted level, desert terrain, and was destroyed. = The private pilot and passenger were fatally injured during the personal = flight that was performed under 14 CFR Part 91. The flight originated = from Lake Havasu City, Arizona, about 0830. The pilot was a member of = the Arizona Ercoupe Group, and along with other members, was = participating in its annual Wing Ding fly-in. The initial portion of the = flight involved traveling to the Kingman Airport, where breakfast was to = be served, and other activities related to the fly-in were planned. The = pilot's airplane was refueled, and he was observed to have performed a = preflight inspection of his airplane. Approaching the uncontrolled = Kingman Airport, the pilot broadcast his position. He did not indicate = that he was experiencing any difficulty controlling the airplane. Within = 10 minutes before and after the accident, other pilots in the group also = entered the Kingman traffic pattern. They reported to the National = Transportation Safety Board that moderate to extreme turbulence was = encountered in the pattern. Several pilots also reported experiencing = windshear while descending on the base and final approach legs. A = ground-based witness, located north of the airport, reported observing = the accident airplane's wings rolling right and left to nearly a = vertical bank. Thereafter, as the airplane turned (onto final approach) = toward the airport it rolled over and rapidly descended. The airplane = was found in an upright attitude approximately 0.6 mile north of the = approach end of runway 21, and was headed 280 degrees magnetic. All = flight control surfaces were found attached to the airframe. The engine = assembly was observed crushed in an aft and estimated 30 to 45 degree = upward direction. The propeller was found torsionally twisted, bent into = an "S" shape, scratched on its cambered surface in a chordwise = direction, and with its leading edge nicked. There was no evidence of = fire.=20 Safe flying Robert Velez N3516H - ------=_NextPart_000_0016_01BE8293.74E1A1A0 Content-Type: text/html; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN"> <HTML><HEAD> <META content=3D"text/html; charset=3Diso-8859-1" = http-equiv=3DContent-Type> <META content=3D"MSHTML 5.00.2014.210" name=3DGENERATOR> <STYLE></STYLE> </HEAD> <BODY bgColor=3D#ffffff> <DIV><FONT size=3D2>Here is a copy of the preliminary report regarding = the fatal=20 ercoupe accident that occurred in March in Kingman Arizona. If anyone has a set they are interested in selling or knows of anyone who does or is parting out an aircraft please let me know. I converted mine and it makes a big difference. It cuts down the low frequency rumble that causes fatigue, etc. they have a web page at www.headsetsinc.com check'em out. Is there any one service station brand that is know for consistent, clean, fuel? BTW I plan on using the same clean gas cans all the time and will always use a filter in my funnel (the kind that filters out water and particles- Aircraft Spruce sells them.) (Before the 100LL advocates flame me please note that I am very aware of the arguments for using aviation fuel as opposed to Mogas- my flight instructor is the local FBO and is very opposed to auto fuel and has told me over and over all the horror stories and reasonings for not using the "wicked stuff". Of course I'm positive his suggestions have nothing to do with him selling 100LL to me at $2.00 a gallon!) Thanks! A smart aleck at the airport had some late april fools day humor about the new GPS units with a polished stainless back. Seems that the front tells you your lost and you flip it over and it tells you WHO's lost... hehe. I mounted a Gamin GPS Pilot III in my coupe with the supplied mounting bracket above the glare sheild. The center post is in a perfect spot for anchoring it. If anyone would like a picture, I'd be happy to send it. I'd thought about going the route you did Dave, but then I realized my sets weren't the most comfortable. So they would be quieter but uncomfortable. Tonight the differance was amazing. I traded off with my passenger and went back to the "old days". ANR is definatly worth having in a coupe. I suppose there will always be something better coming out but the 15k will keep me satisfied for awhile. by the way... I paid $275 for mine w/ bag and it comes with a 30 day return if not satisfied policy.
